Quizzes - the Old and the New

Quizzes

Quizzes can be broadly categorised into 2 genres, Old and New

Old:
  • One point per question
  • No teamwork or competition built in
  • No time limits
  • Usually no feedback to the teacher

This an example from Hot Potatoes software:

New

The new genre of quizzes use multiple hooks to engage the learners.

Students can earn hundreds of points per question depending on:
  • If they answer correctly
  • Time taken to answer - the faster the more points you get
  • If they are on an answer streak

Also:
  • Teamwork is built directly into some games
  • Time limits set for answering - students can't sit and think for a long time (positives and negatives to this).
  • Leaderboards
Kahoot is probably the best known of these:

Others in this category are Quizlet, Quizalize, Quizizz and Formative.

Look at the pages for the quizzes in the pages of this blog. Most have quizzes that you can try yourselves :)

Enjoy this blog on quizzes - and please leave comments if you wish.
